History of Filariasis Prevalence
|
Occurrence of elephantiasis has been observed in New Caledonia since the early days. Bayer (1978) stated that hydrocele of the scrotum was very common in Noumea of Tahiti and also in Liou of the Loyalty Islands; elephantiasis was common over all of Oceania and many victims were found in New Caledonia. (Human Filariasis, Manabu Sasa). A more recent survey conducted from 1995 to 1997 in Ouvea found no clinical cases of filariasis, although infection rates were high.
