CD-ROM and DVD report of GAELF4 meeting has been published

The Report of the fourth meeting of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis has been published as CD-ROM and DVD.

Contents of the CD-ROM are included official statements, presentations of the three days meeting and round table and discussion summary. DVD shows successful PacELF activities and achievements of the LF programme in the Pacific which was highlighted at the 4th GA meeting.


Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) distribution in Fiji

PacELF office has been distributing the Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) to boarding schools and health facilities as the priority sites in the main island of Fiji. The mosquito nets have been distributed and the recipients have been informed the proper methods of using the nets with Information Education Communicating (IEC) materials.

This activity is as a supplemental method to control the disease such as vector control in order to achieve the goal of the LF programme.

The Long Lasting Insecticide Nets and IEC materials were provided by the Government of Japan through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Programme (GGP).


The  fourth meeting of GAELF

The  fourth meeting of GAELF was held in Fiji from 29th-31st March 2006. The  meeting theme was “Towards the Global Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis -  Successes and Challenges”.
 
One of  the important highlights of the meeting was the launching of The PacELF Way- towards the elimination of lymphatic filariasis from the Pacific 1999-2005,  which describes activities and achievements of PacELF to date and individual  country programmes in detail.

PacELF Highlight

PacELF way to filariasis elimination leads the world

PacELF’s activities and achievements are the important highlights of the upcoming 4th GA meeting (March 29th to 31st).

“Approach”

Participating countries and territories work together towards one common goal, filariasis elimination, while creating friendly and supportive environment for the PacELF “family”.

“Success”

Two PacELF countries, Niue and Samoa, have achieved a significant reduction by an average of 85% in the prevalence of filarial antigen after five rounds of mass drug administration.

“Outcome”

The PacELF Way-towards the elimination of lymphatic filariasis form the Pacific 1999-2005, a book summarizing activities and successes of PacELF to date and individual country programmes, will be published at this meeting.

Calendars and posters for Samoa

PacELF Home Office designed and printed calendars and posters for Samoa. The players of Samoa’s famous rugby team “Manu Samoa” posed for photos in the poster to create awareness for Samoa’s 6th round of MDA to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.  

New staff member at Mataika House, Fiji

In January, Masayo Ozaki, a new JOCV volunteer started work with the Fiji National Filariasis Unit (NFU). She will be based at The Fiji Centre for Communicable Diseases Control, Mataika House, Fiji.  Also, Kazumi Nakamoto, a senior JOCV volunteer completed her 2-year contract with PacELF.  She had also assisted the Ministry of Health’s filariasis campaign in Fiji.  

PacELF 8th Annual Meeting

A joint Programme Managers' Meeting for PacELF and Mekong-plus countries is currently being planned to be held at the Fiji Mocambo Hotel in Nadi, Fiji from the 26th - 27th March, 2006
